ECHOSTOP was my attempt to tell a narrative that takes place completely inside the imagination of my protagonist. This type of story is very difficult to tell in the sense of plot because not very much happens, in Anna's external world, anyway. As the film goes on we, the viewer, become increasingly trapped inside Anna's interior (visually) as she invents an alternate reality for herself.
The idea for this film came from the feeling of despair that happens in those difficult few days directly after losing a loved one. Anna's need to find her own closure by inventing her boyfriend's dead body is her personal way of coping, of moving on. Anna cannot seem to escape his face - on the waiter, in her dreams, in her bed - her attempts to quickly move on from him seem futile.
The end of the film reveals my attitude towards the process of healing and emotional recuperation. We cannot move quickly past things that have hurt us. The film, then, for me, is a visual representation of the very beginning of that journey towards moving past the loss of someone we once loved.
